Tasmania, a remote island state off the southern coast of Australia, is famous for its vast and rugged wilderness, most of it protected within parks and reserves. On the Tasman Peninsula, the 19th-century Port Arthur prison site is now an open-air museum. In Hobart, the port capital, the Georgian warehouses of Salamanca Place now house galleries and fashion stores. The Museum of Old and New Art has a contemporary style.
