Calgary, a cosmopolitan Alberta city with several skyscrapers, owes its rapid growth to its status as the center of Canada's oil industry. Yet it remains steeped in the Western culture that gave it the nickname "Cowtown," which is evident in the Calgary Stampede, the massive July rodeo and festival that grew out of the agricultural exhibits that were once were once made here.
