La Coruña is a port city located on a promontory in the region of Galicia (northwestern Spain). It is known for its Roman lighthouse, the Tower of Hercules, which offers sweeping views of the coastline. In the medieval old town is the porticoed square of María Pita, surrounded by narrow pedestrian paths. In this square is the statue of María Pita, a 16th century woman who warned the city of the invasion of Sir Francis Drake.
