Phnom Penh, the bustling capital of Cambodia, is located at the intersection of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. It was a central place for the Khmer empire and for the French colonialists. On the pedestrianized waterfront, surrounded by parks, restaurants, and bars, is the ornate Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum, displaying artifacts from around the country. At the heart of the city is the huge art deco Central Market.
