The club was founded in 1863 by a group of citizens interested in the unification of the country during the civil war.

It is located on 37th Street and Park Avenue in the historic part of Mary Hill, in the center of Manhattan, very close to the railway stations.

It has 59 rooms with bathroom, three dining rooms, ten private rooms, a bar, a reading room, a library, an art gallery, billiards, a hairdresser's, a gym with squash, a recreation room and all member services.

The use of a jacket and tie and correct attire for ladies is required, except on weekends when informal but correct attire is allowed.

The use of mobile phones in the club is not allowed except in the established places, as well as work portfolios and papers in the dining room or living rooms.
