The original concept of the Travelers Club by Lord Castlereagh and others dates back to the return of peace in Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. A club was devised where gentlemen traveling abroad could meet and offer hospitality to distinguished foreign visitors.
Although The Travelers is a gentlemen's club, ladies are welcome as guests. They do not welcome children under 14 years of age. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the building. Mobile phones must be switched off upon entering the Clubhouse, and may only be used in the phone booth in the lift lobby or reception hall. Similarly, work meetings are not allowed in the public rooms; Those who wish to do business can do so in the main room, or they can hire a meeting room. Travelers have a formal dress code (jacket and tie, or national dress) throughout the building, except for the Clubhouse and breakfast. Ladies are expected to dress to a similar standard.
