Founded in 1868, the New York Athletic Club is one of the oldest athletic clubs in the United States. It is located in a privileged place in Manhattan, facing Central Park. It also has sports facilities on Travers Island. The so-called City House –located at 180 Central Park South– is the main headquarters, which occupies a large building built at the beginning of the 20th century in the city of Manhattan and offers panoramic views of Central Park.
In its 24 floors and 35,000 m2 it has two restaurants, a cocktail lounge, a library, a dance hall, a billiards room, several meeting rooms, a solarium, a swimming pool, basketball courts, boxing rings, a fencing and wrestling, judo, and squash courts.
It has eight floors of rooms for members, club guests and corresponding club members, with a total of 187 well-appointed suites.
Just 25 km away, in Long Island Sound, New York Athletic Club has a formidable property of more than 13 hectares by the sea: Travers Island, which completes the options available to members with very varied alternatives, optimal for the weekend; from the Yacht Club with its moorings, the Rowing House, a large swimming pool with sea water, 18 tennis courts, a playing field for all seasons of the year (where you can practice croquet, rugby, soccer and baseball) its large fitness center and a restaurant with an outdoor terrace.
Members of the New York Athletic Club have won more than 120 Olympic medals; the first two were won by the athlete Thomas Burke at the 1896 Athens Games, followed by the 22 medals won in Paris in 1900 in athletics and swimming, and since then there have been victories in sports such as wrestling, fencing, judo, water polo, rowing and athletics.
The recent correspondence agreement (2016) makes available to the members of the Equestrian Circle the formidable facilities that the historic New York Athletic Club has in the center of the Big Apple and on Travers Island in Long Island Sound, next to the waters of the ocean Atlantic.
