The Military Society was founded on January 2, 1852, when the rules of the society were adopted. Previously, on December 27, 1851, a board of directors (later converted into an executive board) had been elected.

The society wanted to be an association open to all officers, where members "in jest and in earnest, as well as at home, could exchange thoughts and opinions, whether on military or other subjects, where they could meet the different conditions that are within our country and our army, and where they can collect what has happened and is happening in the world", a purpose that has remained unchanged during the life of the Military Society.

In the possession of the society are, among other things, some interesting objects related to Charles XII. Among them is a Bible from 1703 that was in the king's possession, a death mask, candelabra, locks of hair and a sword that Charles XII gave to Major von Düring after the trip to Stralsund. The shield is currently deposited in the Army Museum. All items were donated to the society in 1868, to mark the 150th anniversary of the king's death.

Next to Charles Many of the oldest paintings are gifts to the society through the care of Lieutenant Colonel von Francken, who was executive director during the period 1865-1881.
