The Grémio Literário was created in 1846 by Queen D. María II, thus giving her support to the initiative of a prestigious group of writers, politicians and aristocrats from the Portuguese liberal world. Thirty years later, the Grémio moved to its current premises, the Palacio de Loures, in the Chiado neighborhood, the elegant center of Lisbon's intellectual and social society, a building characteristic of local romantic architecture, with decorated rooms, a rich library, a restaurant and a beautiful garden from 1844 with views of the Tagus River.
