Known by New Yorkers as UClub, The University Club of New York is one of the most prestigious private clubs in the Big Apple. Its history dates back to the fall of 1861, when a group of university alumni – mainly from Yale – founded it with the aim of maintaining and expanding their student ties.
The building it has occupied since 1899 is listed as a New York Historic Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. It is the work of the famous McKim, Mead & White architecture studio founded by Charles Follen Mc-Kim, one of the most prominent North American architects of the late nineteenth century, author –among other works– of the Boston Public Library, the New York Penn Station and the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University.
But, as they say in the club, The University Club is much more than an architectural landmark; it has become New York's premier club, offering members fine dining in its elegant dining room, first-class accommodations, a wide variety of social events, as well as extensive sports facilities and a large library. The library with more than 100,000 volumes is the first and most important library of a private club, it is used as a place of research by many of the members.
It has 97 rooms decorated with Chippendale-style furniture and period-style bathrooms with, TV, radio, mini-bar, safe and high-speed Internet access.
The gastronomy directed by chef Robert Bagli is another of the strengths of The University Club, which is used to exchanging chefs with the best North American clubs so that its members and visitors can enjoy a culinary demonstration of its best dishes.
The traditional dress code is in force at all times, requiring the use of a jacket, shirt and tie and the use of jeans, shorts, T-shirts or sandals is prohibited.
